Essential RC car tools worth buying, and what to skip

I've bought a lot of tools I didn't need. Ratcheting driver sets with 40 bits, a fancy magnetic parts tray shaped like a skull, a "complete RC toolkit" off Amazon that came in a nice zip case and fell apart inside a month. Here's the thing nobody tells you when you start: working on RC cars is mostly turning tiny metric screws with a hex driver. That's it. Get that part right and you're 90% of the way there.

So this is the list I'd hand a friend who just picked up their first Traxxas or Arrma and wants to actually wrench on it instead of paying the hobby shop $40 to swap a diff. I'll tell you where to spend and where to buy the cheap one.

Hex drivers are the whole game

Almost every screw on a modern RC car is a metric hex (Allen) head. Not Phillips, not Torx, hex. And you'll use four sizes for nearly everything: 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, and 3.0mm. The 2.0 and 2.5 do most of the work — that's your suspension screws, shock caps, motor mounts. The 1.5 is for set screws on pinion gears and small grub screws. The 3.0 shows up on bigger 1/8 scale stuff and wheel hardware on some rigs.

Buy nice drivers here. I mean it. This is the one place I won't tell you to go cheap, because a soft or slightly-oversized tip will round out a 2mm screw head, and a rounded screw on the inside of a shock tower is a genuinely miserable afternoon. The hardened tip on a good driver bites and stays biting.

My pick is MIP (Moore's Ideal Products). Their Thorp-style hardened tips last for years and the handles have that spinning cap so you can palm them. A set of four runs you more than the bargain bin, sure, but I've had the same MIP 2.0 for probably six years. ProTek RC is the other one I'd point you at — cheaper than MIP, still properly hardened, and their sets show up on sale constantly. Between those two you can't go wrong.

Skip the giant sets. You do not need SAE sizes (this is a metric hobby), you don't need eight nut drivers, and you don't need the ball-end versions yet. Ball-end drivers are handy for reaching a screw at an angle but they strip heads faster if you lean on them. Get straight tips first.

The moment a driver tip starts to feel loose in a screw head, stop. That's the tip wearing or the wrong size going in. Force it and you'll cam out and round the screw. Back off, check you grabbed 2.0 and not 2.5, and if the tip's worn, that driver's done — a $12 replacement is cheaper than drilling out a bolt.

The supporting cast

Once you've got drivers, a handful of specialty tools cover the rest of the car. None of these are optional if you actually run the thing hard.

A turnbuckle wrench. Adjusting camber and toe means twisting turnbuckles, and doing it with pliers chews up the threads. A proper wrench (MIP and ProTek both make them, sized for 4mm/5mm turnbuckles) grabs the flats and spins them clean. Ten bucks, saves you a set of links.

A body reamer. When you mount a new body you have to open up the holes for body posts and cut the wheel arches. A reamer makes clean round holes that don't crack; a drill bit grabs and tears the polycarbonate. This is a five-dollar tool that prevents a $35 body from splitting on its first hard landing.

Shock pliers (sometimes called shock shaft pliers). They hold the shock shaft without scratching it while you unthread the rod end. You can get away without them until the day you gouge a shaft and it starts leaking oil past the seal every run. Then you'll buy them. Digital calipers. Cheap ones. This is where you buy the $15 Harbor-Freight-tier caliper and don't feel bad about it — you're measuring ride height, shock length, and gear stuff to a tenth of a millimeter, not doing machinist work. Any digital caliper that reads metric is fine. It'll change how you set up a car once you can actually measure both sides instead of eyeballing.

A hobby knife. X-Acto or the equivalent. Trimming bodies, cleaning flash off new parts, cutting tires off wheels. Buy a pack of spare #11 blades because a dull blade slips, and a slipped blade in RC almost always finds a finger. Fresh blade, light passes.

The soldering iron changes what you can do

This is the one tool that unlocks a different tier of the hobby. The day you can solder, you stop being dependent on pre-wired everything. You can swap a motor, change a battery connector from the junk Traxxas plug to XT60 or XT90, fix a broken servo lead, build your own harnesses. Every ESC and motor upgrade gets cheaper because you're not paying for pre-soldered convenience.

For years the answer was a bulky station. Now I'd just get a Pinecil or a TS101 — these are USB-C powered pen-style irons that heat up in a few seconds and put out real wattage. You want at least 60W of actual power for RC work, because battery and ESC wire is thick (10-12 AWG) and thin irons just can't dump enough heat into a big connector to make a clean joint. A cold joint on a battery lead is how you get a connector that melts under load.

Get a chisel tip, not a fine point — you want surface area to move heat. Grab a small roll of 60/40 leaded rosin-core solder (it flows easier than lead-free; just wash your hands) and some flux. That's the whole kit. Practice on some scrap wire before you commit to your good ESC.

You don't need this on day one. But it's the upgrade I'd make before anything else once the basics are covered, and a decent USB-C iron is under $50 now, which would've sounded like witchcraft when a Hakko station was the entry point.

What to skip for now

Some stuff looks essential in the marketing photos and just isn't, yet.

A realistic $60 to $100 starter list

Here's what I'd actually buy, roughly in order. This gets you handling nearly every job on a modern RTR or kit without a second trip to the hobby shop.

  1. Four-piece hex driver set, 1.5 / 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.0mm — ProTek to start, MIP if you can stretch. $30-45.
  2. Turnbuckle wrench sized for your car's links. $8-12.
  3. Body reamer. $5-8.
  4. Digital calipers, metric. $15.
  5. Hobby knife plus a pack of #11 blades. $8.
  6. A cheap silicone pit mat. $8-10.

That's a genuine kit for under a hundred bucks, and every piece of it earns its spot. Add shock pliers and the soldering iron when you hit the jobs that need them — you'll know when.

One more thing. You don't have to buy all of this new. Plenty of us upgrade drivers or clear out a pit bag and the old gear is perfectly good — worth a look through the used listings before you pay retail, and the deals page catches the tool sales when they run.
