How I care for RC LiPo packs: the five rules that prevent fires, storage voltage at 3.8V per cell, safe charge rates, puffing, and disposing of dead packs.

LiPo battery care and safety

LiPo packs are the best thing to happen to RC in the last twenty years and also the one component most likely to burn your garage down. Both of those are true. The good news is that almost nobody actually has a fire, and the people who do almost always broke one of five simple rules first.

I've run LiPos in everything from a little 2S Losi Mini to a 6S Arrma Kraton, and I've killed my share of packs by being lazy. So here's how I take care of mine now, the stuff I wish someone had drilled into me on day one.

The five rules that prevent almost everything

If you only remember one section, make it this one. Do these and you'll dodge almost every LiPo problem there is:

  1. Never charge a pack unattended. Not "I'll just run inside for a sec." In the room, awake, watching.
  2. Never store packs fully charged. Get them down to storage voltage (more on that below) if they're sitting more than a day or two.
  3. Never run a pack down past dead. Set your ESC's low-voltage cutoff and quit when the car goes soft. A pack that hits the pavement voltage-wise is a pack that puffs.
  4. Never charge a puffed, dented, or physically damaged pack. If it's swollen, it's done. Retire it.
  5. Charge on something that won't burn. LiPo bag, ammo can, a tile floor away from anything flammable.

That's it. Five things. The rest of this is just detail on why and how.

Storage voltage, and why a full pack dies young

A LiPo cell is happiest sitting around 3.8V per cell. That's storage voltage. For a 2S pack that's about 7.6V total, for a 3S it's 11.4V, and so on. Every decent charger has a "storage" or "storage charge" mode that'll take a pack up or down to that number automatically. Use it.

Here's the part people don't get: a lithium pack left sitting at full charge (4.2V/cell) ages fast. The high voltage stresses the chemistry, and a pack you charged Friday night and then didn't run until next month loses real capacity just sitting there full. I learned this the hard way with a pair of 3S packs I left topped off in a drawer over a winter. Come spring they were puffed and down maybe a third of their runtime. Bad batteries? No. Bad owner.

So the habit is simple. If you charge a pack and then don't run it, put it back to storage. If you know you're running tomorrow, leaving it full overnight is fine — a few hours at full won't hurt anything. It's the days and weeks that kill them.

Charge rate and balance charging

Charge rate is measured in C. 1C means charging at a current equal to the pack's capacity — a 5000mAh pack at 1C is 5 amps. For most sport packs, 1C is the safe, boring, live-a-long-life default. A lot of modern packs are rated for higher, and plenty of them handle 2C fine, but faster charging runs hotter and hot is what wears a pack out. I charge most of my stuff at 1C and only push it when I'm at the track and need a pack turned around between heats.

Always balance charge. Your pack has a main lead and a smaller white balance plug — plug both in every time. Balance charging keeps every cell at the same voltage, and a pack whose cells drift apart is a pack headed for trouble. Skipping the balance lead to save ten seconds is one of those lazy moves that catches up with you.

A good charger matters here. I run a Hobbywing and I've got an ISDT for travel, but honestly any modern balance charger from a name you recognize is fine. The cheap no-name ones that come bundled with a starter kit are where I'd spend the upgrade money first.

Puffing — what it is and when to walk away

Puffing is when a pack swells up like it swallowed a marshmallow. It's gas building up inside the cells from the electrolyte breaking down, and it's a one-way door. A puffed pack does not un-puff.

A little puff on an old, well-used pack isn't an emergency — it's the battery telling you it's near the end. You can usually finish out its life gently, storage-charging it and keeping an eye on it. But a pack that puffs suddenly, or gets hot in your hand, or puffs hard enough that it won't sit flat, is done. Retire it. Same goes for any pack you crashed hard enough to dent or poke a hole in — physical damage to a LiPo is the fast track to a fire, and no pack is worth your house.

The scariest LiPo moment I ever had was a pack that got warm and started puffing while sitting on the bench, hours after a run, from crash damage I hadn't noticed. If a pack is ever hot to the touch or visibly swelling on its own, get it outside onto concrete, away from anything that burns, and leave it there.

Your charging setup

Charge inside a LiPo safe bag at minimum. They're five or ten bucks and they buy you a huge margin. Better still is a steel ammo can with the rubber gasket cracked open a hair so pressure can vent — that's what I use now, and it lives on a concrete floor in the garage. The whole idea is that if a pack does let go, the fire is contained and there's nothing nearby to spread to.

And I'll say it again because it's the rule people break most: don't leave it charging and walk away. A LiPo fire develops over a couple of minutes, not instantly, so a human in the room is genuinely the best safety device you own. How to actually dispose of a dead pack

The old forum advice was to drop a dead LiPo in a bucket of salt water for a week to discharge it. Skip it. The salt-water trick corrodes the terminals and can actually generate gas, and it doesn't reliably bring the cells to zero anyway. It's a myth that won't die.

The right way is to fully discharge the pack, then recycle it. Some chargers have a discharge function that'll take a pack down low — run it there. Or plug it into a car and drive it dead, then let it sit and go dead the rest of the way. Once it's flat, tape over the leads and take it to a battery recycler. Big-box hardware stores and most hobby shops have a lithium recycling bin, and Call2Recycle drop-offs are everywhere in the US. Don't put a lithium pack in your household trash — that's how landfill and truck fires start.

Keep good packs in the rotation, retire the rest

Treat your packs right and a good 3S will give you years and hundreds of cycles. Storage charge them, balance charge them, don't cook them, and don't run them flat. When one starts puffing or its runtime drops off a cliff, let it go — a tired pack that sags under load will make even a good motor feel gutless.

Post-run habits matter as much as charging habits, and batteries are only one part of that. Once you've got your charging routine dialed, the same fifteen minutes on your post-run maintenance will save you far more than it costs.
